The University of Michigan has sponsored vanpooling for its faculty and staff since the 1970s. In addition to being an environmentally friendly option, benefits of vanpooling include a designated parking space, sharing fuel expenses, lower maintenance costs for personal vehicles, no annual parking permit costs, and the ability to be dropped off close to work.
A vanpool consists of at least four members who work similar schedules and agree to ride together. The van is supplied by Commute with Enterprise through Logistics, Transportation & Parking, and each vanpool is provided a reserved parking space in a faculty/staff lot or structure.
Eligibility & Cost
There is a $25 monthly fee for full time employees to participate in the Vanpool program, which is eligible for pre-tax payroll deduction. Vanpool riders also share in the cost of fuel. As an incentive to drivers, the monthly fees will be waived for primary drivers of the vanpool.
You are eligible to join the vanpool program if you meet the following criteria:
- Permanent, full-time status (32 hour appointment or greater)
- Able to commit to riding on a full time basis, at least 4 days per week (faculty/staff with hybrid schedules must commit to riding at least 80% of the days they come to campus)
If you are not a full time U-M employee, you may still be eligible for the vanpool program and can join through Commute with Enterprise. The cost to join a vanpool if you are not a full time employee is $119.00 per month plus tax.
