Night Owl Rides by Lyft

The University of Michigan has partnered with Lyft to provide students with a new late night transportation option, starting on July 1, 2025.

Program Details:
● $4 off all rides during program hours within the service area
● Program Hours are 8:00 PM – 7:00 AM, daily
● Rides must start and end inside the designated service area, shown below

How to Sign Up

Be on the lookout in your @umich.edu email inbox for an invitation from Lyft Business.

All eligible riders will receive this email on July 1. Follow the steps in the email to join the program and receive the discount on eligible rides within the service area.

If you did not receive an invitation and believe this was in error, go to your Lyft mobile app and enter the promo code UMOWLRIDES in the ‘Payment’ – ‘+ Add Lyft Pass’ section to confirm your eligibility.

Don’t yet have a Lyft account? Download the app and create an account to get started.

IMPORTANT: Do not create a new Lyft account using your university email address if you already have a Lyft account.

  • Because Lyft is a mobile app, all Lyft accounts are linked solely to one mobile phone number and up to two email addresses – a “personal” email (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) and a “business” email (@umich.edu)
  • If you attempt to create a second Lyft account using a mobile phone number that is already connected to a Lyft account, you’ll be unable to enroll, as Lyft’s systems will flag the accounts as duplicates and not apply the access to either account.

Rider Safety Tips

  • Verify your ride by making sure the license plate number, driver information, and car
make and model match what you see in the app.
  • Share your location and route with a friend or family member from within the Lyft app so
they can follow your ride in real-time.
  • Follow the Lyft vehicle on GPS via the app.
  • Ask the driver to say who they are picking up.
  • Learn more about Lyft’s rider safety features.

Additional Program Information

  • Do not create a new Lyft account using your university email address – the only way to
gain access to the program is via invitation email.
    • Because Lyft is a mobile app, all Lyft accounts are linked solely to one mobile phone number and up to two email addresses – a “personal” email (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) and a “business” email (@umich.edu)
    • If you attempt to create a second Lyft account using a mobile phone number that is already connected to a Lyft account, you’ll be unable to claim the Pass, as Lyft’s systems will flag the accounts as duplicates and not apply the Pass to either account.
  • Do not forward your invitation email to others – it is only valid for one-time sign up and is linked to your email address (the program cannot be added to multiple Lyft accounts.)
  • If you request a ride that doesn’t meet the program criteria, you will not see the discount shown on your ride confirmation screen and you will pay out of pocket. You can view all program criteria in the ‘Payment’ – ‘Lyft Pass’ section of your Lyft mobile app.
  • The discount will not apply to trips that include multiple stops.
  • Prices may be impacted by distance, traffic, time of day, special events, and prime time surcharges.
  • Cancellation fees, no-show fees, damage fees, and driver tips will be charged to your
payment method on file in the Lyft app.
  • For lost and found or ride refund requests, please contact Lyft Support either through your Lyft mobile app or at this link.
