Student Move-In will take place from Wednesday, August 21 through Sunday, August 25.

The campus community should anticipate increased traffic and rerouting on Wednesday, August 21, as student move-in begins. The increased traffic this activity brings may create traffic delays and will necessitate parking space closures and alterations to the city and U-M transit systems.

Traffic and Street Adjustments

Expected to be in place from the early morning of Wednesday, August 21, through late night on Sunday, August 25, the following changes in traffic patterns and parking will be in place to accommodate U-M student move-in:

  • Thompson: One-way southbound from East Jefferson to Packard and meters bagged
  • East Madison: One-way eastbound from Packard to South State and meters bagged
  • Observatory: One-way southbound from East Ann to Geddes and meters bagged
  • East Washington: One-way westbound from Fletcher to Thayer and meters bagged
  • Maynard: Meters bagged from East Jefferson to East William
  • East University: Meters bagged between Hill and Willard
  • Church Street: Meters bagged between Hill and Willard
  • North University Court: Meters bagged
  • Washington Heights: Closed from Observatory to East Medical Center Drive and meters bagged 
  • East Ann: One-way eastbound from Zina Pitcher Place to Observatory and meters bagged    

Parking impacts

Most parking meters in the immediate vicinity of residence halls will be bagged and reserved for students and families who display the proper move-in unloading permit.

Several university parking lots will be converted to move-in use ONLY for the duration of move-in.

University lots that will be impacted Wednesday, August 21 through Sunday, August 25 are as follows:

  • Lot M28 (on Washington Heights)
  • Lot M95 (just east of Markley Hall): west half of lot will be for move-in participants
  • Lot E1 (on North University Court across from Stockwell Hall)
  • NC2 & NC4 (Housing lots next to Bursley)
  • NC32 (Bursley/Baits): section of lot closed from Monday, August 19 – Sunday, August 25.
  • Palmer Drive Parking Structure (N26): all visitor parking will be for move-in participants. Entry/exit gates will be open starting at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 21.
    • Gold and Blue permit parkers can still use the visitor entrance lane to access parking.
  • W16 (“Triangle”) Lot: Thompson at Madison and Packard will be controlled for move-in
  • Thompson Parking Structure

Please note that Wall Street area structures have Blue parking availability for Medical Campus parkers who typically use M28 or M95.

Bus Route Adjustments

Both the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority and U-M Logistics, Transportation & Parking will be modifying some bus routes to accommodate the changes in traffic flow. Please visit the AAATA rider alerts page and the LTP transit alerts page for details.

Uniformed Housing Security and university police officers will be on-site during move-in and will aid in maintaining efficient traffic flow in the residence hall areas.
